Dbarta24 Report — Police have arrested 53 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its associated organizations during a late-night raid on a residential flat in the capital’s Vatara area.
The drive was conducted at approximately 9:05 PM on Thursday (August 13), following secret intelligence indicating that members of the party—including its student and youth wings, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Jubo Mohila League—had gathered to plan flash processions and anti-state programs centered around August 15.
Officers seized political banners, placards, and black badges from the location. According to police sources, all detainees—comprising both male and female activists—were dressed in traditional white panjabis and adorned with black badges on their chests.
Investigators noted that the group had already finished dinner inside the apartment prior to the police entry.
Mazharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Vatara Police Station, confirmed the operation and revealed that the raid foiled a larger gathering of high-profile leaders.
“We received intelligence that several top-tier leaders were scheduled to join the gathering. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, our team conducted the raid before those senior figures arrived, effectively dismantling their plan,” said OC Mazharul Islam.
He added that the attendees had gathered inside the residential unit to chant anti-state slogans and finalize preparations for street rallies across the capital marking August 15.
Legal proceedings against the 53 arrested individuals are currently underway at Vatara Police Station, while law enforcement authorities maintain heightened vigilance across the city to prevent further unauthorized political gatherings.
