Special Correspondent, Dhaka- The Bangladesh Army is set to return to barracks as the government has decided to withdraw troops from field duties across the country in phases.

The decision was finalized during the first meeting of the newly reconstituted Core Committee on Law and Order.

According to the meeting minutes, the final withdrawal process will begin on June 6. Troops will first be pulled back from remote districts, followed by divisional cities and larger districts.

The government aims to complete the entire withdrawal process by the end of June.

The meeting, chaired by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, included high-ranking officials such as the IGP of Police, the DMP Commissioner, and the Director General of BGB.

The committee discussed several key issues, including the national law and order situation, nationwide extortion, and potential changes to the police uniform.

Background:

The army was initially deployed on July 19, 2024, by the then-Awami League government following violent protests surrounding the quota reform movement.

After the fall of the regime on August 5, 2024, the military remained on the ground to assist a recovering police force and was granted magisterial powers on September 17 of that year.

Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman had previously expressed the military’s intent to return to barracks once the police force was fully restructured.

With the situation now stabilizing under the newly elected BNP government, the transition is finally taking place.
