Bangladesh Takes Swift Steps to Establish ‘Loss and Damage Fund’ for COP-28

Muyabia Laboni ,Dhaka : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced rapid measures to establish the ‘Loss and Damage Fund’ for effective implementation during the upcoming COP-28. To enhance Bangladesh’s capabilities in this regard, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for cooperation from relevant stakeholders.

The fund has already garnered commitments from 19 countries, pledging a total of 792 million US dollars. It is anticipated that the fund will grow in the future. The new fund will be initially managed through the World Bank for the first four years.

Speaking at the workshop on ‘COP-28: Expectations and Achievements, and Future Action Plans’ held at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Thursday (December 21), Special Envoy on Environment and Climate Change Affairs, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, revealed the significant role Bangladesh will play in COP-28.

Chowdhury stated that the Bangladesh delegation has actively contributed to the COP-28 discussions, particularly in initiating the ‘EU Framework for Global Climate Resilience.’ The objective of this framework is to mitigate adverse impacts, risks, and vulnerabilities associated with climate change while promoting adaptive programs and support.

Additionally, the program ‘Work Program on Just Transition Pathways’ has been initiated, aligning with the Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Climate-Resilient Development path.

During the workshop, Dr. Farzana Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, chaired the session. She highlighted Bangladesh’s representation in COP-28, focusing on the nation’s commitment to the ‘Work Program on Just Transition Pathways’ and the sustainable management of climate financing through the ‘Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Climate-Resilient Development’ approach.
