Border Tensions Escalate Over Indian ‘Push-In’ Attempts

Special Correspondent from Border Area – Tensions are escalating along the Bangladesh-India border following repeated attempts to illegally push individuals from India into Bangladeshi territory.

Over a 24-hour period spanning from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, personnel from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to forcefully deport at least 130 people across 10 different border points.

Experts have criticized these actions, stating that forceful deportation attempts violate international border laws and humanitarian norms. In response to the developing situation, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has declared a state of maximum alert along the borders and has reinforced surveillance by involving local communities in joint night watches.

BGB Thwarts Multiple Border Crossings

According to data provided by the BGB headquarters, these “push-in” attempts occurred across the western, northern, and northeastern border regions of Bangladesh.

  • Jhenaidah Border: A major incident unfolded at the Samanta Border Outpost (BOP) under the 58th BGB Battalion in Maheshpur. BSF personnel arrived in a prison van carrying 30 to 35 individuals and opened the border gate to push them into Bangladesh. The move was successfully thwarted when BGB members and local villagers put up a strong resistance, forcing the BSF to load the individuals back into the van and retreat.

  • Jessore Border: Similar forceful entry attempts targeting several men and women were blocked at the Goga and Rudrapur borders.

  • Joypurhat Border: The BSF gathered 10 individuals near the Kaya and Basudebpur borders for deportation, but retreated due to increased BGB intelligence monitoring and patrolling.

  • Chapainawabganj Border: At the Bangabari border, BSF members from the 12th BSF Battalion’s Ashrafpur camp attempted to push in 28 individuals, including 12 men, 10 women, and 6 children. BGB forces stopped them at the zero line. Local sources reported that the stranded individuals include residents from Satkhira, Khulna, Narsingdi, and Jamalpur. They remain under the open sky at the zero line amid harsh weather conditions.

  • Netrokona Border: BGB forces took a strict stance at the Kachugara border after discovering a gathering of 15 to 20 individuals prepared by the BSF for deportation.

Upcoming Border Conference

This border crisis coincides with the upcoming 57th DG-level Border Conference between the BGB and BSF, scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, from June 8 to 11. A 15-member Bangladeshi delegation will be led by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui.

Official Stance: A BGB official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, “This conference will heavily focus on illegal push-in attempts, India’s unauthorized constructions in the No Man’s Land, and border killings. Bangladesh will register a strong protest against these incidents.”

Expert Concerns and Legal Question Mark

Former Home Secretary Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed emphasized the need for urgent high-level bilateral talks, noting that patience and tolerance are essential for maintaining stable relations between neighbors.

Human rights activists point out that “push-backs” or “push-ins” lack legal validity even within India. Kirity Roy, head of the Indian human rights organization ‘MASUM’, explained that under Indian law (Section 14 of the Foreigners Act), undocumented individuals must be arrested, presented before a magistrate, and formally deported through judicial channels after serving any assigned sentence—not pushed across borders in prison vans under the cover of night. Amnesty International has also labeled forceful push-ins a severe violation of human rights.

Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad reiterated the government’s firm stance:

“Our BGB is on high alert at the border. If India claims that any Bangladeshi citizens are residing there illegally, they must be returned through proper legal repatriation channels once their identities are verified. We will not tolerate forceful push-ins.”

Community Engagement in Border Security

To counter these covert actions, the BGB has actively involved local residents. Joint patrols featuring union parishad chairmen, members, and local elites have been conducted across various borders in Panchagarh. This community-backed vigilance has successfully neutralized multiple nighttime deportation attempts by the BSF.
