Dbarta24 Health desk — The dengue situation in Bangladesh continues to worsen as two more fatalities were reported across the country in the last 24 hours, raising the national death toll to 61 this year.
According to the latest bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday (August 9), 672 new patients were admitted to various hospitals nationwide during the same period.
The rapid surge in hospitalizations has pushed the total number of dengue infections recorded in 2026 to 19,345, approaching the critical threshold of 20,000.
A breakdown of the single-day hospital admissions shows that the Khulna Division recorded the highest number of new cases at 140, followed by Dhaka North City Corporation with 110 patients and Dhaka South City Corporation with 91.
Elsewhere, Chittagong Division reported 88 cases, Barisal Division 84, Dhaka Division (outside city corporations) 66, Rajshahi Division 57, Mymensingh Division 27, Rangpur Division 5, and Sylhet Division 4.
The health authority noted that August has already witnessed a steep spike in infections, recording 4,035 hospital admissions and seven deaths in just the first nine days.
This comes immediately after July, which has been the deadliest month of the year so far with 9,206 hospitalizations and 36 casualties.
In contrast, June saw 2,907 admissions and 13 deaths, while earlier months reported significantly lower figures: 2 deaths each in January and February, 1 in May, and 13 in June.
With hospitals seeing a steady influx of patients from both urban centers and regional districts, public health experts emphasize the urgent need for intensified vector control measures and community awareness to curb mosquito breeding.
