Dhaka and the country’s urban areas suffer from air pollution

Khairul Alam: Air pollution is not reduced even in rain. Experts attribute this to unfit cars. Air pollution is usually reduced by rain. But this time, the health of the country’s air is not getting better rain even due to continuous rain.

According to the air quality tests by the Environment Department, the air in seven places in the country has been declared unhealthy. Experts believe that the source of air pollution is now changing.

According to the Department of Environment, they check air quality at 13 locations across the country every day. In areas where there are industries, more emphasis is laid on air quality testing.

According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), air quality between zero and 50 is considered good. If it is between 51 and 100, it means moderate air quality, and between 101 and 150 means a caution or warning.

An air value between 151 and 200 is considered unhealthy. Air between 201 and 300 is considered very unhealthy and above 301 is considered extremely unhealthy. Mymensingh tops the seven districts in the country where air quality is considered unhealthy.

According to AQI, the air quality of Mymensingh is 175. After this comes Savar, whose AQI is 167. The next name is Ghazipur. According to AQI, the air quality in this district is 161.

Dhaka’s AQI air quality is 158, next only to Ghazipur. Very close air quality is Comilla with 156, Narsingdi with 154, and Rangpur with 151. Apart from this, Narayanganj 150, Rajshahi 105, Khulna 117, Chittagong 82, and Barisal 73 are the cities in the air quality index.

Earlier sources of air pollution included brick kilns, with road construction being a major source. The brick kilns were closed during the rains.

Construction will also be stopped. But now the biggest source of pollution is vehicular pollution. Due to this pollution, now the pollution is not reduced even during rainy days.

At present, about 1.5 lakh unfit vehicles are running in Dhaka. Most of these are public transport. The pollution from these vehicles has become harmful for Dhaka.

Apart from this, while climbing the flyover, the engines of these vehicles are getting weak and emitting black smoke. This smoke keeps coming out every moment.

Recently, cars with black smoke are often seen on the roads. For these reasons, air pollution is not reduced even when it rains. The solution is to eliminate unfit cars.
