Special Correspondent — Following the official resignation of President Md. Sahabuddin on health grounds, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has offered a striking assessment of the outgoing head of state, noting that despite being elected during a “mafia regime,” Sahabuddin consistently maintained deep respect and support for the country’s democratically elected government.

Speaking at a press conference at Parliament on Friday afternoon shortly after receiving the resignation letter, the Speaker confirmed that he has officially assumed the duties of the presidency in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Sudden Resignation Over Severe Health Issues

The formal process concluded at approximately 4:00 PM on Friday when Major General A.S.M. Bahauddin, the Military Secretary to the President, delivered the signed letter to the Speaker’s office.

An hour later, during a 5:00 PM briefing, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad announced that President Sahabuddin submitted his resignation under Article 50(3) of the Constitution. Consequently, under Article 54, the Speaker has stepped into the presidential role.

Elaborating on the circumstances leading to the sudden departure, the Speaker disclosed that the former president cited severe, multi-organ physical complications rendering him unable to discharge his constitutional duties.

According to the official letter, Sahabuddin suffers from serious cardiac issues—having previously undergone heart bypass surgery—alongside hypertension, diabetes, and kidney complications.

Recent medical evaluations also diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, a condition that periodically causes sudden loss of consciousness. Due to the need for long-term medical care, Sahabuddin cited physical and mental incapacity as the primary driver behind his decision to step down.

Assessment and Well Wishes

Highlighting Sahabuddin’s political posture during recent transitions, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad expressed appreciation for the outgoing president’s democratic alignment.

“I believe that although he was elected during the era of a mafia government, he has always expressed his support and respect for the government currently elected by the people’s vote. I wish him well and pray for his good health.”

Constitutional Transition

With the presidential office now vacated and transitional mechanisms activated under Article 54, the country enters a critical period of constitutional continuity.

The Speaker concluded the press briefing by extending his formal wishes for the former president’s swift recovery as the nation prepares for the next phase of administrative adjustments.
