Excelerate LNG Terminal Suspends Operations for Five Days Due to Cargo Shortage

Moheshkhali floating LNG terminal operating off the coast of Bangladesh.
Dbarta24 Report- Industrial and domestic energy supplies in Bangladesh face renewed strain following a total suspension of gas feeds from Excelerate Energy’s Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) off Moheshkhali.

The operational halt, caused by a lack of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargoes, took effect on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to persist until a scheduled delivery arrives early next week.

According to officials from the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), a subsidiary of Petrobangla responsible for LNG imports, the terminal is projected to remain offline through at least Sunday.

Normal supply operations are anticipated to resume once the incoming LNG carrier docks and connects to the offshore terminal facility.

While Excelerate’s facility remains idle, the adjacent Summit FSRU continues to deliver natural gas into the national grid without interruption. RPGCL Deputy General Manager (LNG) K.M. Zahirul Islam confirmed that Summit’s facility maintained a steady output of approximately 558 million cubic feet per hour as of Wednesday evening.

“A cargo carrying LNG is scheduled to arrive on August 23. Gas supply can only resume once it connects to the terminal.”
The current supply disruption follows a series of recent operational setbacks at Moheshkhali’s dual floating terminals.

On July 21, a fire broke out at the Excelerate terminal, forcing a temporary shutdown for emergency repairs before partial operations resumed on August 5.

Weather-related disruptions subsequently halted LNG offloading at Summit’s terminal for three days, triggering severe nationwide gas shortages that disrupted operations across hundreds of industrial units.

With Excelerate’s output entirely offline until the next cargo arrival, energy authorities are monitoring grid pressure closely to mitigate further industrial disruptions.
