Flood Alert for 5 Districts in Bangladesh as 4 Rivers Cross Danger Level

Online Desk | April 29, 2026 – Heavy to very heavy rainfall across various parts of the country has triggered flood concerns in five districts.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC), flooding has already begun in the low-lying areas of Moulvibazar and Netrokona.

Sub-divisional Engineer of FFWC, Partha Pratim Barua, stated on Wednesday morning that flood situations may also arise in the low-lying regions of Sylhet, Habiganj, and Sunamganj due to the ongoing torrential rain.

Rainfall Records and Forecast

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted that this heavy rainfall may continue until May 4. Rainfall data from the last 24 hours shows:

  • Nikli, Kishoreganj: 161 mm (Highest in the country).

  • Bhola: 151 mm.

  • Feni: 148 mm.

Meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik noted that the rain will not be continuous in one area but will occur intermittently across different regions until May 4.

River Levels on the Rise

Currently, the water levels of four rivers—Bhugai Kangs, Manu, Someswari, and Magra—are flowing above the danger level. Three of these rivers flow through the Netrokona district.

Additionally, the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers have risen by more than one to one and a half meters.

Engineers noted that because these rivers are relatively small, heavy rainfall leads to rapid increases in water levels. Experts believe the flood situation will improve once the rainfall subsides.
