Dbarta24 Desk – Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh, Benazir Ahmed, has been released on bail by a court in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The legal development comes after months of speculation regarding his whereabouts and legal status following the allegations of corruption against him back in his home country.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the Dubai court approved the bail application on July 27. Following the completion of necessary legal formalities, he was released from custody on August 30.
Strict Travel Restrictions in Place
Despite his release from jail, Benazir Ahmed’s legal troubles are far from over. Reports confirm that he remains subject to stringent travel restrictions, meaning he is prohibited from leaving the United Arab Emirates.
The court’s decision to grant bail is conditional, ensuring that he remains available for ongoing legal proceedings.
Context of Extradition
The legal battle for his return to Bangladesh continues as the government remains committed to bringing him back to face corruption charges.
The Bangladeshi authorities have been actively coordinating with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to facilitate his extradition.
As part of the extradition process, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh compiled a comprehensive 144-page document detailing the charges, arrest warrants, and evidence against the former police chief.
This dossier was translated into Arabic and forwarded to UAE authorities through diplomatic channels.
Background of the Case
The former IGP’s detention in Dubai first came to light on June 14, when the Minister of Home Affairs informed the national parliament.
It was reported that the National Central Bureau (NCB) of the UAE had notified the Bangladesh government via email on June 12 that Benazir Ahmed had been apprehended in Dubai in connection with his corruption cases.
While Dubai authorities have not released an official statement regarding the specific conditions of the bail or the status of the extradition request, the legal proceedings remain active.
The international community and the public in Bangladesh continue to monitor the situation as the legal tug-of-war between the two nations persists.
