Dbarta24 Health desk — Four more individuals—two with laboratory-confirmed measles and two with suspected symptoms—have died across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room on Saturday (August 8).

The latest fatalities push the cumulative death toll from confirmed and suspected measles cases past 860 since mid-March, highlighting an escalating public health challenge across the country.

Surveillance and Case Load Breakdown

In the last 24 hours alone, health officials identified 677 patients presenting with measles symptoms. Between March 15 and August 8, the cumulative number of suspected measles cases nationwide reached 135,332.

Laboratory testing confirmed 99 new measles cases over the past day, bringing the total number of confirmed infections during the same nearly five-month period to 17,040.

Hospitalization Trends and Mortality Analysis

Data from the DGHS indicates heavy pressure on healthcare facilities:

  • Hospital Admissions: A total of 117,444 patients exhibiting measles symptoms were admitted to hospitals nationwide between March 15 and August 8.
  • Recoveries: Over the same timeframe, 113,200 individuals successfully recovered and were discharged from medical care.
  • Suspected Measles Fatalities: Two deaths were reported in the last 24 hours among patients with measles symptoms. Since March 15, suspected measles complications have claimed the lives of 769 children.
  • Confirmed Measles Fatalities: Two confirmed deaths occurred in the past day, bringing the total number of laboratory-verified measles fatalities to 98 since March 15.
Combined, deaths attributed to both confirmed cases and symptomatic complications now stand at 867 since the health authority began tracking the surge on March 15.

Concerns Over Child Vulnerability

The high concentration of fatalities among children underscores the critical threat posed by measles-related complications, such as severe pneumonia, diarrhea, and encephalitis.

Public health experts stress that timely vaccination drives and early hospital interventions remain vital to controlling transmission and mitigating further fatalities as health facilities continue to treat incoming cases.
