GPS Mandatory in All Public Transport from August 1: BRTA

Staff Reporter, Dhaka- Installing and maintaining active Global Positioning System (GPS) devices will be mandatory for all public transport across the country starting August 1.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) announced this decision today, Monday, following a public notice.

The move aligns with a directive issued by the Road Transport and Highways Division to ensure safer road transport management through the integration of modern information technology.

According to the BRTA, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued the official gazette notification regarding this matter on June 11.

Vehicle owners can obtain the technical specifications for the GPS devices directly from local BRTA offices or download them from the official BRTA website.

The notice further clarified that, under Section 25 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, new vehicle registrations and fitness certificate renewals will only be granted after verifying that a functional GPS device has been installed.

The BRTA has requested full cooperation from public transport owners and all stakeholders to successfully implement this safety measure.
