According to a report by the Indian media outlet Anandabazar, an official notification has already been issued regarding this matter.
Under the revised guidelines, any applicant from Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan seeking Indian citizenship is prohibited from holding any valid or expired passport from their country of origin without declaring it.
If an applicant possesses a valid passport, they are strictly required to provide detailed information, including the passport number, date of issue, and its validity period.
Furthermore, they must submit a written undertaking promising that within 15 days of being granted Indian citizenship, they will surrender their valid or expired passport to the relevant Senior Superintendent or Superintendent of the Postal Department.
The central government has amended the 2009 rules to insert a specific clause immediately after Schedule 1C of the regulations.
Notably, Schedule 1C applies to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who are seeking Indian citizenship.
It is worth mentioning that the central government enacted the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019.
The amended law eased the path to Indian citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
Following that law, the Union Home Ministry has now introduced these new changes by amending the 2009 Citizenship Rules.
