India Restricts Nepal’s Electricity Export to Bangladesh to 40 MW

Online Desk – Nepal will export 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Bangladesh, instead of the initially planned 60 MW. The electricity import is scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday (June 15).

The export of the additional 20 MW has been put on hold for now due to a lack of clearance from India.

Energy officials stated that India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has not yet granted the necessary approval, according to a report by The Kathmandu Post.

Citing official sources, The Kathmandu Post reported that the CEA withheld its approval due to capacity constraints on the transmission lines.

Furthermore, several procedures remain incomplete, including the revised or new tripartite agreement and decisions from the Nepal-India Joint Steering Committee (JSC) at the energy secretary level.

Nepal typically exports its surplus electricity to India and Bangladesh during the monsoon season, while importing power from India during the winter months.

Notably, during a Nepal-India JSC meeting held in Dhaka on November 27, 2025, an agreement in principle was reached to increase power exports to Bangladesh by an additional 20 MW under the existing 40 MW framework. It was also agreed at the time to push forward with the necessary official procedures.
