Julián Álvarez Apologises to Atlético Fans After Match-Winning Goal

Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez celebrates after scoring the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruña.

Dbarta24 Sports Desk- Julián Álvarez scored the winner in Atlético Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña, then apologised to supporters for comments about wanting to join Barcelona.

The Argentine striker said he understood why fans were upset and accepted that his words—and the timing—had been wrong.

Atlético’s home supporters had booed Álvarez during recent matches after his remarks about a possible move to Barcelona.

Some fans applauded him after his goal against Deportivo on Saturday, although others continued to express their displeasure.

“I’d like to apologise to our fans for what I said at the World Cup; it was a mistake in terms of how I said it and the timing,” Álvarez told Movistar. He added that supporters had shown him great generosity since he joined the club and said it was now his job to work hard and give his best.

The goal came as Atlético sought to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona. It was Álvarez’s first league goal in several months, following another goal in the Champions League earlier in the week. He said he was feeling better physically and working to improve.

Atlético coach Diego Simeone welcomed the apology, saying he respected people who were willing to ask for forgiveness. He also said the team needed Álvarez and was pleased to see the forward feeling more at ease.

Álvarez’s goal gave Atlético the victory, but rebuilding his relationship with the supporters will take more than one moment. The striker said he intends to let his work on the pitch speak for him.
