Dbarta24 Sports Desk- Lionel Messi proved once again that his hunger for silverware remains unsated, guiding Inter Miami to a 2-0 victory over Mexican side Cruz Azul to lift the Campeones Cup.
The victory secured the 49th major trophy of Messi’s iconic 21-year career and marked his fifth title since joining the South Florida club.
Playing at Inter Miami’s Nu Stadium, the 39-year-old maestro delivered a match-winning display, opening the scoring before setting up the decisive second goal.
Messi broke the deadlock in the 24th minute in striking fashion. Meeting a pinpoint cross from long-time friend and teammate Luis Suárez, Messi leaped into the air to power an unstoppable header into the net.
The strike was a historic milestone—his 100th goal in an Inter Miami shirt, achieved in just 115 appearances. This stands as the fastest century of goals Messi has scored for any team in his career, surpassing his 100-goal benchmarks for Barcelona (188 matches) and Argentina (174 matches).
The Argentine legend turned provider in the 81st minute, delivering a precision corner kick that Casemiro headed home to seal the 2-0 win and secure the trophy.
Following the final whistle, Inter Miami’s head coach, Cristian González, shared a personal revelation about his captain’s determination. “Leo promised me he would make me a champion,” González revealed. “He kept his word.”
Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul also paid tribute to Messi’s unmatched consistency. “People have come to treat Messi’s superhuman performances as routine, but believe me—this is not normal,” De Paul said. “We should simply enjoy watching him and appreciate the love he brings to every single match.”
While some might downplay the prestige of the Campeones Cup compared to a Champions League or World Cup, Messi’s jubilant celebrations alongside Suárez showed that his passion for the game remains as vivid as when he first stepped onto the pitch two decades ago. Having retired from international duty, Messi continues to redefine longevity at the club level, bringing real magic to American soccer.
