Dbarta24 Health desk— Bangladesh’s ongoing measles outbreak shows no sign of abating as six more children succumbed to measles-like symptoms over the past 24 hours.
The lethal viral infection continues to spread across the country, driving up both infection rates and fatalities at an alarming rate.
According to the latest bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday afternoon (August 9, 2026), 1,063 new patients were identified across the country in a single day—comprising 75 confirmed measles cases and 988 individuals showing symptoms of the virus.
Rising Death Toll and Case Load
Since the start of the current surge on March 15, the nationwide death toll attributed to measles and related symptoms has mounted to 873 children. Among these fatalities:
-
98 children have been laboratory-confirmed to have died from measles.
-
775 children died displaying severe measles symptoms.
Over the same period, health authorities recorded 136,320 suspected cases and 17,115 confirmed cases nationwide, marking one of the most severe public health crises targeting children in recent years.
Hospitalization Trends and Pressure on Healthcare
Medical facilities are working around the clock to manage the influx of pediatric patients. In the last 24 hours alone, 938 children were newly admitted to hospitals nationwide with measles and measles-like symptoms, while 942 patients were discharged following treatment.
Cumulatively, 118,382 patients have required hospital admission since mid-March. Of them, 114,142 children have recovered and been discharged home, according to official DGHS statistics.
Outlook and Urgent Need for Intervention
Health experts emphasize that high recovery rates offer some reassurance, but the continuous stream of new cases and daily deaths underscores significant gaps in routine immunization coverage and community awareness.
Health officials urge parents across the country to ensure their children receive full doses of the measles vaccine and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as high fever, rash, coughing, or eye inflammation appear.
