Monsoon Fury: Bangladesh Braces for 5 More Days of Widespread Rain and Heavy Downpours

Dark monsoon clouds over Bangladesh bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity.

Desk Report – Widespread rainfall is set to persist across Bangladesh over the next five days as an active monsoon system continues to dominate the region.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued a weather outlook on Sunday, warning of gusty winds, persistent rain, and heavy to very heavy downpours in several divisions.

According to the BMD’s 120-hour forecast released at 9:00 AM on Sunday, a monsoon axis runs through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and the central parts of Bangladesh, extending all the way to Assam.

An associated extension stretches into the North Bay, keeping the monsoon highly active over Bangladesh and moderate over the North Bay of Bengal.

Day-by-Day Regional Forecast

The meteorological department has outlined a detailed breakdown of the rainfall pattern expected across the country through mid-week:

  • Sunday: Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely to lash most places across all eight divisions—Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Isolated places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet may experience heavy falls.

  • Monday: The intensity is expected to remain high, with most parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Sylhet, along with many places in Chattogram and Barishal, receiving rain. The BMD warned of moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas.

  • Tuesday (July 14): Rainfall may slightly recede but will remain widespread. Many places in Rangpur and Rajshahi, alongside a few places in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet, will witness rain or thunder showers. Moderately heavy to heavy rain is anticipated in parts of Rangpur and Rajshahi.

  • Wednesday (July 15): Rain or thunder showers are predicted for a few areas across all eight divisions, with isolated moderately heavy falls. Temperatures nationwide may experience a slight rise.

  • Thursday (July 16): Precipitation is likely to impact many places in Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram, and a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet. Coastal regions under Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram should prepare for moderately heavy to heavy showers. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain relatively unchanged.

The persistent monsoon spell comes at a time when cumulative rainfall has already saturated the soil in many parts of the country.

Urban areas, particularly Dhaka and Chattogram, face a heightened risk of temporary waterlogging in low-lying sectors during periods of heavy downpours.

The weather office concluded its briefing by reiterating that the trend of active rainfall will firmly grip the country throughout the five-day period, urging citizens and maritime bodies to remain alert to changing weather conditions.
