Sylhet Correspondence: Four people, including a mother and her son, were killed in a head-on collision between a private car and a stone-laden truck in Sylhet.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning at around 8:00 AM on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Satmile area of Osmaninagar upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Mosammat Sayma Akter (35), her son Ayan (6), her sister Shameema Yasmin (38), and her cousin Sohail Bhuiyan (38). Sayma and Ayan were residents of Ashulia, near Savar in Dhaka, while Sohail hailed from Mogharapara village in Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj.
According to police, the family had left Dhaka in a private car on Saturday night to visit Sylhet. As they reached the Satmile area on Sunday morning, their car collided head-on with a truck carrying stones.
All occupants of the car were critically injured. Locals rescued them and rushed them to a private hospital in Osmaninagar, where Sayma and Ayan were declared dead. Shameema and Sohail were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Alam Badsha, sub-inspector of Sherpur Highway Police Station, confirmed that the bodies of the mother and son were kept at a hospital in Osmaninagar, while the other two were placed in the morgue at Osmani Medical College.
The private car and the truck were seized from the accident site, but the truck driver fled the scene.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving on highways. Authorities are investigating the accident further, while the families of the victims mourn their devastating loss.
