Sports Desk: Portugal secured a dominant 5-1 victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League, sealing their place in the quarterfinals.
Cristiano Ronaldo starred with a brace, extending his remarkable form in the competition.
The match, held on Friday at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, saw Portugal dominate the second half after a goalless first period.
Poland, missing their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski due to a back injury, struggled to contain the hosts.
The breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Rafael Leão opened the scoring for Portugal, giving them a 1-0 lead.
In the 72nd minute, Ronaldo doubled the advantage with a penalty after Poland’s Jakub Kiwior was penalized for handball inside the box.
Portugal then struck three more times in the final 10 minutes. Bruno Fernandes made it 3-0 in the 80th minute, and three minutes later, Neto Pedro added another to make it 4-0.
The cherry on top came in the 87th minute when Ronaldo executed a stunning bicycle kick to score his second goal of the match, pushing the score to 5-0.
Poland managed to pull one back in the 88th minute through a consolation goal by Dominic Markżuk, but the result was already sealed at 5-1 in favor of Portugal.
After the match, Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martínez reflected on the team’s performance: “The first half was very poor, as we lost focus and became frustrated.
But the second half was the best I have seen. We changed our mentality, increased our intensity, and supported each other better. We didn’t let Poland play.”
Portugal remain unbeaten in the competition, topping the group with 13 points from five matches. Croatia are second with 7 points, while Poland and Scotland are tied in third and fourth with 4 points each.
