PSG Eyes Rare Real Madrid Record After Sinking Liverpool

Sports Desk: With 15 titles to their name, Real Madrid stands unrivaled at the top of European football. However, their legacy includes a more specific, modern feat: they are currently the only team to have successfully defended their crown since the European Cup was rebranded as the UEFA Champions League. Now, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is on the verge of joining that elite company.

The Road to History

PSG clinched their maiden Champions League trophy on May 31 last year, defeating Inter Milan 5-0. Under the tactical brilliance of Luis Enrique, the Parisians are now just two steps away from retaining their title.

Following a solid 2-0 victory at the Parc des Princes on April 8, PSG traveled to Anfield for the second leg of the quarter-final. While fans expected “Anfield Magic” from Liverpool, PSG remained composed, securing another 2-0 win on English soil.

Dominance Over Liverpool

A 4-0 aggregate scoreline sent PSG through to the semi-finals. Despite Liverpool manager Arne Slot making four tactical changes—including bringing on Mohamed Salah for Hugo Ekitike and introducing young Rio Ngumoha—the Reds failed to break PSG’s defense.

The breakthrough for PSG finally came in the 72nd minute through Ousmane Dembele. The French forward struck again in stoppage time (90+1′) to seal the victory.

“Retaining the Champions League is incredibly difficult; we know that,” Luis Enrique said in the post-match press conference. “I am really happy with how the team played. You can see the confidence and the type of players we have.”

The Elite Club of Back-to-Back Champions

While Real Madrid is the only team to retain the trophy in the modern Champions League era (notably winning three in a row from 2016-2018), several clubs achieved the feat during the old European Cup format:

  • Real Madrid: Five consecutive titles (1956–1960).

  • Ajax: Hat-trick of titles (1971–1973).

  • Bayern Munich: Hat-trick of titles (1974–1976).

  • Inter Milan: Back-to-back titles (1964–1965).

What’s Next?

PSG’s semi-final opponent will be decided tonight in the second leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Bayern currently holds a 2-1 lead heading into the clash at the Allianz Arena. On the other side of the bracket, Arsenal will face Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners leading 1-0 on aggregate.

PSG is now just 180 minutes away from a final that could see them etch their name alongside Real Madrid as modern-era back-to-back kings of Europe.
