International Desk — At least eight people were killed and dozens injured after a relentless barrage of Russian missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) slammed into Ukraine’s capital early Thursday morning.
The destructive aerial assault struck approximately three dozen locations across the city, reducing sections of residential buildings to rubble.
The strikes commenced just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went public with intelligence reports warning citizens of an impending, large-scale Russian offensive.
Death Toll Rises as Apartments Collapse
According to Taimur Takachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, the coordinated Russian bombardment targeted nearly 36 sites across the metropolitan area, leaving eight residents dead.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least 34 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The strikes inflicted severe structural damage on a nine-story residential complex, causing a significant portion of a high-rise apartment building to collapse entirely. Emergency rescue teams are currently working through the debris, where several civilians are feared trapped.
As air raid sirens echoed through the early hours, terrified residents evacuated their homes, carrying sleeping mats into underground metro stations to seek shelter from the falling ordnance.
Zelenskyy’s Cut-Short Diplomatic Trip
The attack unfolded shortly after President Zelenskyy abruptly cut short his official visit to Ireland to return to Kyiv.
Hours before the first explosions shook the capital, Zelenskyy had stood alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, issuing a stark warning based on high-level intelligence.
During that joint press conference, the Ukrainian President pleaded with his citizens to remain hyper-vigilant and move to secure bomb shelters immediately.
Zelenskyy also hit out at the Kremlin, stating that despite Ukraine’s public openness to engaging in meaningful peace dialogues, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains completely opposed to ending the hostilities.
According to Zelenskyy, Putin’s agenda remains rooted solely in deeper aggression against Ukraine and the broader European continent.
Regional Escalation and Defensive Retaliation
The scale of the morning bombardment sent shockwaves beyond Ukraine’s borders. Poland, a neighboring NATO and European Union member, took immediate precautionary measures by briefly scrambling its fighter jets to secure its eastern frontier.
The aircraft were later recalled after authorities confirmed no airspace violations had taken place.
This latest bombardment underscores the volatile reality in Kyiv, proving that despite robust defense systems, the city remains highly vulnerable to saturation strikes.
As rescuers comb through the collapsed high-rise apartment block, the casualty count may continue to fluctuate, emphasizing the high civilian cost of Russia’s unyielding air campaign.
