Khairul Alam From maldives: Bangladesh has been crowned the champions of the SAFF U-20 Championship after a dramatic and hard-fought victory over arch-rivals India. In a thrilling final match played on Friday night at the Maldives National Stadium in Male, Bangladesh secured the title by winning the penalty shootout 4-3.
The Weight of History
This victory carries deep significance for the young Bangladeshi squad. Just last year, the team faced heartbreak in the final of the SAFF U-19 Championship against host India in Arunachal Pradesh, losing in a penalty shootout. This win in the U-20 category serves as powerful revenge and a redemption arc for several players who were part of that agonizing loss.
Ronan Sullivan: The Star of the Show
The match showcased the immense talent of US-based player Ronan Sullivan. Having already made a dream start to the tournament with a brace in the opening match against Pakistan, he concluded the tournament in spectacular fashion. Sullivan was responsible for creating two major chances in regulation time: a precise free kick in the 14th minute that Mithun headed just wide, and a near-miss bicycle kick right before the halftime whistle.
Ultimately, it was Sullivan who stepped up to take the critical final penalty. With the pressure of the championship on his shoulders, he struck a flawless right-footed shot into the net, sparking massive celebrations among the thousands of Bangladeshi fans in the stadium and across the globe.
Goalless Deadlock and Sudden Death in the Shootout
Despite an intense and end-to-end battle, regulation time ended without any goals as both teams prioritized strong defense. As per the tournament rules for youth levels, the game went straight to a tiebreaker rather than extra time.
Bangladesh gained an early advantage when goalkeeper Ismail Mahin made a spectacular save on India’s first penalty shot by Rishi. Subsequent successful kicks by Murshed Ali, Chandan Roy, and Fahim put Bangladesh ahead 3-2. After India’s Vishal Yadav leveled the score, the advantage briefly shifted when Bangladesh’s Samuel hit the crossbar.
However, the tide turned again when India’s Omang Dodong blasted his shot over the crossbar. That mistake paved the way for Sullivan to convert the winning penalty and seal the historic victory.
This is the second time Bangladesh has won the SAFF title in this age group, having previously defeated hosts Nepal 4-1 in the 2024 final.
