Stock market capital plunges by 49 thousand crore in a week

Khairul Alam: The country’s stock market has witnessed a steep decline within a week due to continuous downfall. In just five trading days last week, the stock market has incurred significant losses.

During the week, the prices of shares and units of more than five times the number of companies have risen and fallen, resulting in a staggering 49 thousand crore loss in the capital of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) within a week.

Most of the companies have experienced a decrease in the prices of their shares and units, along with a decline in trading activities.

Consequently, the stock market has remained on a downward trajectory throughout the week. The capital market of the DSE has lost over 70 thousand crore taka during this five-week decline.

During the past week, the DSE has recorded price hikes in the shares and units of only 69 companies, while the prices of 301 companies have decreased. The prices of 31 companies have remained unchanged. This indicates that the prices of shares and units of 75 percent of the companies have decreased.

As a result of the decrease in prices of the majority of companies, the capital market stood at 6 lakh 99 thousand 635 crore taka at the end of the week, compared to 7 lakh 48 thousand 827 crore taka at the end of the previous week. In other words, the capital of the DSE has decreased by 49 thousand 192 crore taka or 6.57 percent during the week.

During the preceding week, the market capital had decreased by 11 thousand 896 crore taka or 1.56 percent. In the three weeks before that, it had decreased by 1 thousand 291 crore taka or 0.17 percent, 4 thousand 452 crore taka or 0.59 percent, and 6 thousand 60 crore taka or 0.79 percent respectively.

Thus, the market capital of the DSE has decreased by 72 thousand 891 crore taka during the five-week period.

Meanwhile, the main price index of the DSE, DSEX, has decreased by 144.72 points or 2.27 percent during the past week. In the preceding week, the index had decreased by 141.78 points or 2.16 percent.

In the three weeks before that, it had decreased by 19.42 points or 0.31 percent, 62.30 points or 0.98 percent, and 37.10 points or 0.58 percent respectively. Thus, the index has decreased by 405.32 points during the five-week period.
