Khairul Alam : The World Bank has approved a $300 million loan for Bangladesh. The amount of money in Bangladeshi currency is about 3 thousand 210 crore taka (about 107 taka per dollar).
World Bank funds will be used to improve the efficiency of gas distribution and consumption through a prepaid meter system for residential and industrial customers in Bangladesh. It will also help reduce methane emissions in the natural gas value chain.
The World Bank approved the funds at its main office in Washington, DC, on Friday (July 28). This was confirmed by the company’s office in Dhaka.
According to the World Bank, these funds will help improve efficiency in the gas sector and reduce carbon emissions in gas transportation, natural gas leaks, and losses in distribution networks.
In addition, residential and industrial users will reduce consumption and enhance network monitoring capabilities. Under this project, more than 12 prepaid gas meters will be installed in Dhaka and Rajshahi.
Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited will install 54 per cent residential customers, 1.28 thousand prepaid meters for Rajshahi division and 1.1 million prepaid meters in Dhaka. under which all resident customers of Western Gas Company Limited (PGCL) will come. Accordingly, 50 smart meters will be launched for major industrial facilities.
