Two more garment factories receive environmental certification

Economic Reporter: Two more garment factories in the country have received environmental certification. The approved establishments are Windy Apparels Limited in Tongi, Gazipur, and Comfit Banana Leaf in Mirzapur, Tangail.

This information has been disclosed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Saturday (March 16). Consequently, the number of environmentally certified factories in the country has risen to 213.

Both factories have received environmental certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). Out of a total of 110 points, if any factory scores more than 80, it is awarded the ‘Lead Platinum’ certification. Similarly, a score between 60-79 earns the ‘Lead Gold’, 50-59 secures ‘Lead Silver’, and 40-49 qualifies for ‘Lead Certified’ certification.

Windy Apparels Limited and Comfort Banana Leaf have attained Lead Gold certification. Windy Apparels scored 69 out of 110 points, while Comfort Banana Leaf scored 73.

According to BGMEA, the number of environmentally certified garment and textile factories in the country has increased to 213. Among them, 80 hold Lead Platinum certification, 119 have Gold, 10 have Silver, and 4 have Certified certifications.

Nine out of the top 10 environmentally certified factories in the world are located in Bangladesh. Among them, the highest-ranking factory worldwide to achieve environmental accreditation is SM Sourcing in Konabari, Gazipur.

Out of 110 points, this factory has secured 106. Other leading environmentally certified factories in the country include Green Textile in Mymensingh, Nitol Asia, and Integra Dresses in Gazipur, Remi Holdings and Futulla Apparels in Narayanganj, Lida Textile and Dyeing and Lee’s Fashion Industries in Gazipur, and Tarasima Apparels in Manikganj.
