Khairul Alam; Dhaka: At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured following a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that was felt across various districts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, at 10:38 AM on Friday (November 21). The tremor’s epicenter was located in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. The fatalities include five in Narsingdi, four in Dhaka, and one child in Narayanganj.

Narsingdi, The Epicenter: Five Deaths Reported

Narsingdi, the epicenter of the quake, reported the highest number of casualties, resulting from both structural failure and shock-induced cardiac arrest.

  • Father and Son Killed: Delowar Hossain (37) and his son, Omar Faruk (11), from the Gabtoli area of Narsingdi town, died when bricks fell from the roof of an under-construction building.

  • Crushed Under Debris: Kazem Ali Bhuiyan (75) from Palash Upazila was crushed under the debris of his mud house.

  • Cardiac Arrest: Nasir Uddin (65) from Palash succumbed to a heart attack induced by panic during the tremors.

  • Fall from Height: Forkhan (40) from Shibpur Upazila died after falling from a tree during the earthquake.

Dhaka Toll Rises to Four Following Building Collapses

  • Bangshal Railing Collapse: Three people were killed in Koshaituli, Bangshal, when a railing of a five-story building collapsed. The deceased were identified as Rafiul Islam (a student of Salimullah Medical College/Mitford), Haji Abdur Rahim (47), and Mehrab Hossain Rimon (12).

  • Security Guard Killed: A security guard, Md. Maqsud (50), was killed in Madina Bag, Mugda, after a railing of a building under construction collapsed on him. He was a resident of Noakhali.

Infant Dies in Narayanganj Wall Collapse

A tragic incident in Rupganj Upazila, Narayanganj, claimed the life of a one-year-old child.

  • Fatema, a one-year-old infant, was killed when a brick wall of a tin-shed house collapsed on her.

  • The child’s mother, Kulsum Begum, was carrying Fatema as they walked when the quake started. The nearby wall in the Islam Bag 5 No. Canal area collapsed instantly, killing the child on the spot. Kulsum Begum and a neighbor were injured.

Rescue operations are underway, and the injured have been admitted to various hospitals. Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the structural damage caused by the severe tremor.
