The newly identified variant has been named BA point 2 point 86. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a tweet on Thursday that such patients have been found in the United States, Denmark and Israel.
In a separate tweet on the same day, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the newly identified Ba pt 2 pt 86 virus has been listed as a ‘variant under surveillance’.

So far, the existence of this new variant has been detected in the bodies of only a handful of patients in 3 countries including the United States.
In preliminary studies, we found that the new virus emerged after 36 mutations of the XBB1 point 5 viruses, and the new virus resembles the strains that were dominant in the early stages of the pandemic.’
