🏰 Whether you are planning a day trip from Dhaka or a comprehensive tour of Mymensingh, this ultimate travel guide covers everything you need to know about Alexander Castle.
📜 History and Architectural Wonder of Alexander Castle
Built in 1879 by the Maharaja of Muktagacha, Shuryakanta Acharya Chowdhury, the palace was constructed in honor of the then-District Magistrate, Mr. Nathaniel Alexander, to safeguard his estate.
Why is it called ‘Lohar Kuthi’?
The Maharaja imported highly skilled artisans all the way from China to build this palace. It was crafted using an extraordinary and robust combination of wood and iron—a rarity in Indian subcontinent architecture at the time. Due to the extensive use of iron beams and frameworks throughout the structure, the locals famously dubbed it “Lohar Kuthi” (The Iron Bungalow).
Aesthetic Features and Design
-
Artistic Sculptures: The grand main entrance of the castle is guarded by two exquisite white marble statues, while several Greek-style female sculptures adorn the surrounding premises.
-
Natural Air Conditioning: In an era before modern technology, the ceiling of this two-story building was engineered using mica and glitter (
shumki) to reflect heat, ensuring the interiors remained remarkably cool even during scorching summers. -
The Premises: The backyard of the castle features a massive pond, a beautifully manicured flower garden, and an artificial lake that adds to its serene charm.
Footprints of Great Legends
Alexander Castle has hosted some of the most influential global and national figures in history. Its grounds have been graced by Lord Curzon, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Nawab Sir Salimullah, and Kemal Atatürk (Kamal Pasha).
Most notably, the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore stayed here for a few days during his historic visit to Mymensingh in 1926.
Current Usage: Today, this heritage palace serves as the library for the Mymensingh Teachers’ Training College (TTC). Exiting through the back gate of the castle leads you directly to the scenic Brahmaputra River, the historic Circuit House, and Zainul Abedin Park.
