Bangladesh Launches Online Marriage Registration to Combat Child Marriage

Khairul Alam: Bangladesh takes a significant step towards curbing child marriage by implementing an online registration system for marriage and divorce, announced by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

In a bold move against child marriage, Bangladesh introduces online registration for marriage and divorce.

Innovative Initiative: Under the project titled ‘Civil Registration and Vital Statistics: ICT Infrastructure Development for Marriage and Divorce Registration,’ the government aims to streamline the marriage and divorce registration process through an online platform.

Ministry’s Insight: According to the Ministry of Law and Justice, this initiative will be coordinated with the Cabinet Division’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Program.

The marriage and divorce registration process will be integrated with national identity cards, birth and death registrations, causes of death records, education, and migration programs.

Age Verification Measures: As part of the process, individuals seeking marriage registration will face age verification. If a person is not of legal age, marriage registration will be prohibited, effectively countering child marriage.

Financial Allocation: The proposed budget for the project stands at BDT 11,68,68,000, as submitted to the Planning Commission. Upon approval, the project is expected to roll out the online marriage and divorce registration system by June 2025.

National Impact: This forward-thinking project aligns with Bangladesh’s commitment to eradicating child marriage and ensuring a more transparent and efficient registration process for marriages and divorces.

Future Prospects: The Ministry of Law and Justice anticipates that the online marriage and divorce registration system will be fully operational by June 2025, marking a significant milestone in the fight against child marriage and promoting responsible and legal unions.
