Health Desk — The cumulative death toll from confirmed and suspected measles cases in Bangladesh has breached the 800 mark, following the tragic deaths of six more children suffering from measles-like symptoms within a 24-hour window.
According to the latest epidemiological bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday (July 22), the total number of fatalities linked to the ongoing outbreak has now risen to 803 since surveillance tracking began on March 15.
Daily Infections and Mortality Tally
The DGHS health report revealed that while no laboratory-confirmed measles death occurred in the past 24 hours, six children succumbed to severe measles symptoms.
-
24-Hour Casualties: 6 deaths linked to suspected measles symptoms.
-
24-Hour Infections: 1,037 total new cases (133 laboratory-confirmed measles cases and 904 symptom-consistent cases).
-
Hospital Care: 834 patients were newly admitted to medical facilities nationwide, while 883 recovered patients were discharged in the same period.
With these latest figures, the nationwide tally of suspected measles deaths stands at 708, while laboratory-confirmed measles fatalities remain at 95.
A Growing Pediatric Crisis
Since mid-March, Bangladesh has been battling a sharp surge in viral infections among young children.
According to health experts, immunity gaps due to missed routine immunizations in recent years have created a large pool of susceptible children, enabling swift community transmission.
| Epidemiological Parameter | Cumulative Total (Since March 15) |
| Suspected Measles Cases | 120,352 |
| Laboratory-Confirmed Cases | 14,841 |
| Total Hospital Admissions | 103,078 |
| Recovered & Discharged | 99,294 |
| Combined Death Toll | 803 |
Dhaka Division continues to bear the heaviest mortality burden during the outbreak, followed by Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Chattogram.
Health Directorate’s Statement
In its regular press release, the health authority highlighted ongoing containment measures:
“The health directorate is closely monitoring hospital surveillance data and coordinating nationwide response efforts,” the DGHS Control Room bulletin stated. “Hospital admission rates remain high, but the majority of hospitalized patients—over 99,000 to date—have successfully recovered and returned home.”
The escalation of the measles outbreak highlights an urgent need to reinforce routine Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination coverage and community outreach across urban slums and rural areas.
As hospitals continue to manage high admission volumes, public health authorities are urging parents to seek immediate medical attention if children display high fever, skin rashes, or respiratory distress.
