Tarikul Alam: Bangladeshi-born Dr. Rumman Chowdhury has been included in the list of the world’s top 100 people for his contribution to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The list was published Thursday on Time magazine’s website.
Dr. Rumman has worked in the field of ‘Applied Algorithmic Ethics’ combining data science and social science. He mainly works on the ethics of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Dr. Rumman was born in Rockland County, New York in 1980. From childhood, she was a big fan of science fiction and the TV series X-Files, which made her curious about science.
Rumman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Management Science and Political Science and an MSc in Statistics and Quantitative Methods from Columbia University.
In addition to working in Silicon Valley, she earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California.
She researched how to use data to free people from bias and how to verify the impact of technology on society.
She worked as an engineering director for a team at Twitter (now X) from February 2021 to November 2022. During this time, she worked to reconcile ethical standards with Twitter’s artificial intelligence.
