Conjoined Twins Shifa and Rifa Successfully Separated at Dhaka Medical College

Khairul Alam, Dhaka : Shifa and Rifa, conjoined twins born in Betagi, Barisal, have been successfully separated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (Dhamek).

The complex surgery took place on September 7, lasting 10 hours and involving the participation of 82 medical professionals.

The surgery was led by Professor Sahanur Islam, head of Unit-4 in the pediatric surgery department.

He noted that a remarkable spirit of collaboration was demonstrated among the medical team during the procedure.

Shifa and Rifa are the daughters of Mahmudul Akter (25) and Badsha Mia (30) from the Kazirabad area of Betagi. The twins were born on June 7 of last year.

On Sunday, September 22, Dr. Sahanur Islam reported that Rifa has recovered well after the surgery, while Shifa is currently being treated for a blood infection.

Both infants are under 24-hour observation to monitor their health progress.

Several years ago, Dr. Sahanur Islam also led the surgery to separate conjoined twins Tofa and Tahura at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Tofa and Tahura are now seven years old and continue to attend follow-up appointments at the hospital.

The expenses for the separation surgery and ongoing treatment of the twins have been covered by the hospital’s social service department, Akij Group, the National Heart Foundation, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, BSMMU, BIRDEM Hospital, and other contributors, including an anonymous teacher and the twins’ parents.
