Counter-Terrorism Unit Raids Savar House, Arrests JMB Suspect and Seizes Cache of Explosives

Law enforcement officers conduct a counter-terrorism raid at a multi-story residential building in Savar, Dhaka.
Dbarta24; Savar Correspondent — In a late-night operation on Tuesday, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), alongside local police, raided a residential building in Savar’s Hemayetpur, arresting a suspected militant and recovering a significant stash of improvised bombs and bomb-making equipment.

Midnight Operation in Hemayetpur

The joint drive targeted a multi-story building owned by Abdul Jalil in the Dakshin Shyampur area under Hemayetpur, Savar. Law enforcement cordoned off the premises while bomb disposal experts carried out searches inside.

Briefing reporters at the scene around 10:45 PM on Tuesday, Saiful Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, confirmed that the raid was initiated based on actionable intelligence regarding active members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Arrest and Recovery of Pipe Bombs

According to police, officers initially apprehended a suspect in the Hemayetpur area after receiving a tip-off that JMB operatives were hiding out with dangerous explosives.

During the initial arrest, police searched the suspect’s bag and recovered five powerful, custom-fabricated pipe bombs.

Subsequent interrogation led law enforcement directly to the ground-floor apartment of the Dakshin Shyampur residence, where a secondary search yielded additional bombs alongside a substantial stash of explosive-manufacturing materials.

Disguised as a Family Tenant

Police revealed that the suspect had rented the ground-floor unit on August 1 using a false identity.

Ilma, the daughter of the building owner Abdul Jalil, told journalists that two individuals, including a man named Abbas Ali, finalized the rental agreement on August 2 and moved in the following day.

“They told us a husband and wife would live here, and that they were drivers by profession who would also enroll their children in a nearby school. We rented the flat thinking it was a normal family. We had no idea they were hiding such dangerous items inside,” Ilma said.

Surge in Local Security Concerns

Tuesday’s operation follows a similar incident on July 30 in nearby Ashulia, Savar, where police discovered a custom-made bomb packed inside a travel bag left behind at a local grocery store. That device was later safely detonated by the CTTC bomb disposal unit.

Authorities have not officially linked the two events, but the CTTC drive and bomb disposal operation in Savar remain ongoing as investigators attempt to uncover the full extent of the network behind the explosives.
