Crisis in Bangladesh: Onion import allowed from 9 more countries

Business Report: Apart from India, the government has allowed onion import from nine other countries.
In the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Agriculture has given permission to import 21 thousand 580 tons of onions from these countries.

This information was given in a press release of the Ministry on Thursday (August 24) afternoon. It said, that apart from India, permission has been given to import onions from nine other countries.

These include 2 thousand 400 tons from China, 3 thousand 910 tons from Egypt, 11 thousand 820 tons from Pakistan, 1 thousand 100 tons from Qatar, 2 thousand 110 tons from Turkey, 200 tons from Myanmar, 33 tons from Thailand, and 4 tons from the Netherlands. And 3 tons have been allowed from UAE.

It was also told in the notification that 3 lakh 79 thousand tons of onions have arrived in the country so far against the permission to import 13 lakh 73 thousand tons of onions.

The government had allowed the import of onions from India a few months back in view of the rise in onion prices in the country’s market. Recently, India imposed a 40 percent additional duty on onion exports. This stopped the import of onions from India.
The onion market is volatile once again. Onion is now being sold at 70-100 taka per kg in the country’s market.
