Business Report: The deadline for individuals to submit their annual income tax returns has been extended by one month.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced today that the deadline for all taxpayers, except companies, to file their returns without penalties has been extended.
This extension applies to both online and offline submissions.
The NBR stated that the extension was granted in response to requests from various professional groups.
As a result, the new deadline for submitting returns has been set for December 31. Previously, the deadline for individual taxpayers was November 30, and extensions are usually announced on the final day.
However, this time the NBR proactively announced the extension ahead of the deadline.
Officials from the NBR revealed that the decision to extend the deadline was influenced by factors such as the July-August protests and uncertainties in business and commerce.
Additionally, on October 22, the NBR issued a directive making it mandatory for certain officials—such as those in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur City Corporation areas, employees of scheduled banks, mobile phone operators, and several multinational companies—to file returns online.
These companies include Unilever Bangladesh Limited, British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Marico Bangladesh Limited, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, Bata Shoe Company (Bangladesh) Limited, and Nestlé Bangladesh PLC.
The online return submission system was launched on September 9, and currently, an average of 8,000 e-returns are being filed daily.
The NBR reported that so far, 375,000 e-returns have been submitted. There are approximately 10.5 million taxpayers in Bangladesh, with an average of 4 million filing returns annually.
