Dhaka Tops Global Air Pollution List Even on Holiday

Real-time air quality index map showing Dhaka at the top of the global pollution rankings.

M K Alam; Dhaka – Despite being a weekly holiday, Dhaka has once again topped the list of cities with the worst air quality globally.

As of 10:03 AM on Friday (May 8), the Air Quality Index (IQAir) recorded Dhaka’s air quality in the “unhealthy” zone.

According to the IQAir scale, a score between 151 and 200 is classified as “unhealthy”.

Dhaka’s current position highlights a persistent environmental crisis, even on days when traffic and industrial activity typically decrease.

India’s Delhi followed Dhaka in the second spot with a score of 153, also categorized as unhealthy, while Lahore, Pakistan, occupied the third position on the list of most polluted cities.

The index defines scores of 0–50 as good, 51–100 as moderate, and 101–150 as unhealthy for sensitive groups. Scores exceeding 300 are considered “hazardous” or a disaster for public health.
