Dhaka will raise the Teesta issue in the Hasina-Modi meeting in New Delhi

Tarikul Alam: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the G-20 Summit in New Delhi next week. On the sidelines of the conference, the Prime Minister will hold a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the meeting, Dhaka’s side will raise the issue of Teesta’s crisis.

After the inter-ministerial meeting on ‘United Nations Water Conference-2023’ at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (September 3), Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen said this in response to a question from journalists.

The secretary said I have discussed the issue of Teesta River at the high political level. I hope the Prime Minister will raise the matter this time too. Besides, we have other issues.

He said we have 54 identical rivers. India has the Ganges Water Sharing Agreement, which will also be brought up in the talks. Our Joint Rivers Commission and others continue to discuss all issues.

On Saturday (September 2) in a seminar in Dhaka, the Foreign Secretary spoke about the issue of cross-river talks in relation to India. He was asked whether inter-state rivers will be discussed in the Hasina-Modi meeting and the discussion in today’s inter-ministerial meeting.

In response, Masud bin Momen said, we did not discuss it separately. I have discussed the implementation of some other issues.

The secretary gave a message of early awareness to solve the water problem in the future. He said we have a lot of water. There is no reason to worry about it.
