Law Report: The Cabinet has given final approval to the proposed draft Cyber Security Act with provisions for bail and commutation of sentence in some cases.
This approval was given in the Cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s office in Tejgaon the capital on Monday presided by Sheikh Hasina over the meeting. After the meeting, Law Minister Anisul Haque gave this information to the journalists.
He said that the previous ‘Digital Security Act’ is being replaced by the Cyber Security Act. Two more clauses have been made available. Besides, the punishment has been reduced in many cases.
The minister said that now there is no non-bailable section of the draft law except the technical section.
Regarding the proceedings of the Digital Security Act cases, he said, “They will continue.” The new Cyber Security Act will not apply there. But we are taking steps to ensure that no jail term is imposed in Digital Security Act cases.
In the face of various criticisms, the government announced the repeal of the controversial Digital Security Act and the new Cyber Security Act.
Following this, on August 9, the draft of the Act was published on the website of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department, and the views of stakeholders were sought. They are given 14 days for this. It received about 500 comments.
