Staff Correspondent ; Dhaka – The holy Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated across Bangladesh on Thursday, May 28, as the moon for the month of Zilhaj was sighted in the country’s sky on Monday.
The National Moon Sighting Committee announced the decision on Monday evening following a meeting at the Islamic Foundation conference room in the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad presided over the meeting, which was held to review information on the sighting of the Zilhaj moon for the Hijri year 1447 and fix the date of the festival.
“Since the Zilhaj moon has been sighted in the country’s sky on Monday evening, the holy Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on Thursday, May 28,” the minister confirmed after the meeting.
Earlier on Sunday, the Zilhaj moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia. Accordingly, Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated there on Wednesday, May 27 (10 Zilhaj), while the holy Hajj will be observed on the preceding day, May 26.
Alongside Saudi Arabia, Oman, Indonesia, and Malaysia have also announced they will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on May 27. However, Brunei, like Bangladesh, will celebrate the festival on Thursday, May 28.
