Muyabia Labony ; Dhaka – The holy month of Jilhaj has officially begun in Bangladesh, meaning the holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across the country on May 28.
The National Moon Sighting Committee announced the decision on Monday (May 18) evening.
However, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning, stating that there is a strong possibility of cyclones and severe Kalbaishakhi (nor’wester) storms during the Eid celebrations.
According to the BMD’s long-term forecast, one or two low-pressure systems are likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the second half of May.
Meteorologist Dr. Md. Bazlur Rashid confirmed that at least one of these systems could intensify into a depression or a cyclone.
A specialist committee meeting also revealed that while overall rainfall across the country might remain normal, several regions are at risk of heavy downpours.
Divisional Rainfall Forecast:
A division-wise breakdown shows varying levels of expected rainfall for the month:
- Sylhet: Highest expected rainfall between 520 mm and 540 mm.
- Mymensingh: 340 mm to 360 mm.
- Chattogram: 330 mm to 350 mm.
- Rangpur: 260 mm to 280 mm.
- Dhaka: 250 mm to 270 mm.
- Barishal: 220 mm to 250 mm.
- Rajshahi: 170 mm to 190 mm.
- Khulna: 160 mm to 180 mm.
Alongside the heavy rain, the country is expected to experience light to moderate Kalbaishakhi storms and thunderstorms for 5 to 8 days.
Out of these, 2 to 3 days could bring severe nor’westers accompanied by hailstorms.
Regarding the specific weather forecast for Eid day, meteorologist Dr. Md. Omar Faruq told the media, “Since it is currently the nor’wester season, storm and rain are perfectly normal.
While there is a forecast of rain in a few regions toward the end of May, it is too early to pinpoint exactly which areas will face what amount of rainfall.”
