Empowerment Through Law of the Common People (ELCOP) expresses its profound grief at the passing of renowned writer and law academic Iftekhar Mahmud, who died on Thursday, October 30, 2025, in Dhaka after a prolonged battle with brain cancer.
A distinguished law teacher, eloquent speaker, and admired literary figure, Iftekhar Mahmud dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of justice. After completing his law studies at the University of Rajshahi, he briefly served in the Bangladesh Civil Service before devoting himself entirely to teaching and writing. For nearly two decades, he taught at Eastern University, where he earned deep respect and affection from students and colleagues for his intellectual clarity, humility, and compassion.
Beyond academia, he made a significant contribution to Bangla literature. His acclaimed works — Kotha Ar Golper Jibon, He Digbidik He Odrish, Shikore Shakhay Meghe, Humayun Ahmeder Bhonghi O Bhongurata, Kotha Kagojey, and Onuposthit — bear testimony to his rare ability to weave thought and emotion with literary grace.
ELCOP remembers him not only as a respected teacher and a gifted writer but also as a humanist who believed deeply in empowering people through law. His unwavering commitment to justice and empathy for the marginalized resonated strongly with ELCOP’s mission and values.
His passing marks an irreparable loss for Bangladesh’s legal academia and literary community. His intellect, integrity, and lifelong dedication will continue to inspire everyone striving for a more just and humane society.
