Senior Correspondent; Dhaka: The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has detained Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the former Speaker of the National Parliament.
She was picked up from the Dhanmondi area of the capital around 4:30 AM on Tuesday.
DB Joint Commissioner Nasirul Islam confirmed the detention, stating that she is currently in DB custody at the Minto Road office. “We are collecting information regarding the cases filed against her. Details will be provided later,” he told reporters.
Notably, a murder case was filed against her on August 27, 2024, in connection with the death of a goldsmith named Muslim Uddin during the student-led mass uprising. She is also accused in several other cases in Rangpur.
Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury served as the Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament for four consecutive terms starting in 2013. She resigned from her post on September 2, 2024, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
