Court Report; Dhaka: A Dhaka court has rejected the remand plea for former Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, and ordered her to be sent to jail.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police requested a two-day remand for her in connection with a case filed at Lalbagh Police Station. The case involves allegations of violence, vandalism, and attempted murder during the mass uprising in 2024.

The Court Hearing

On Tuesday afternoon, Shirin Sharmin was brought to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court from the DB office. Both the remand request from the police and the bail plea from her lawyers were rejected by Magistrate Md. Jewel Rana.

What the DB Claimed

In their application, the DB stated that they needed to question the former Speaker to find other fugitives and gather evidence. They reported that during initial questioning, she allegedly admitted some involvement but avoided specific questions about other suspects.

The Case Details

The case was filed by Md. Ashraful Fahim, who was injured during a peaceful protest in the Azimpur area on July 18, 2024. He alleged that under the orders of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other top leaders, police and armed individuals opened fire on protesters. Ashraful lost vision in his left eye due to the injuries.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is the number three accused in this case. She was detained early Tuesday morning from a relative’s house in Dhanmondi. Police confirmed there are six cases against her, three of which are currently under investigation.
