Sports Desk: dbarta24.com– A new chapter has been written in the history of European football as German Bundesliga club Union Berlin appointed 34-year-old Marie-Louise as their interim head coach. With this move, she becomes the first woman in history to lead a men’s professional team from the dugout in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The Transition at Union Berlin
The appointment follows a disappointing 3-1 defeat to bottom-table side FC Heidenheim on Saturday. Following the loss, the club management decided to part ways with coach Steffen Baumgart.
Despite currently sitting 11th in the league table, Union Berlin’s form in 2026 has been alarming, with only two wins in 14 matches.
While they are 11 points clear of the relegation zone, the board remains concerned about the team’s downward spiral. Marie-Louise has been entrusted to steady the ship for the final five matches of the season.
Club director Horst Heldt explained the decision, stating that the board did not want to hide behind their league position and felt a fresh start was necessary to improve performance.
A Trailblazer in Football
This isn’t the first time Marie-Louise has broken barriers. In November 2023, she became the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga.
In January 2024, she even briefly led the team during a match against Darmstadt when then-head coach Nenad Bjelica was serving a suspension.
A former German youth international and a Women’s Champions League winner with Turbine Potsdam, Marie-Louise has been managing Union Berlin’s U-19 side since July 2025.
She is also slated to become the head coach of the club’s women’s team after the current season ends.
The Road Ahead
Upon her appointment, Marie-Louise expressed her confidence: “The gap at the bottom of the table is not huge, so our position in the Bundesliga is not yet fully secure. I am delighted with the trust the club has placed in me. I believe we can earn the points necessary to stay up.”
