Thomas Dooley Appointed as Bangladesh Football Team’s New Head Coach

Sports Desk | dbarta24.com- The long wait, speculation, and drama surrounding the appointment of the Bangladesh national football team’s new head coach have finally come to an end. German-born American football legend Thomas Dooley has officially taken charge of Hamza Choudhury and the boys.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) confirmed the appointment on Friday morning through an official post on their Facebook page. After finalizing his contract, the 65-year-old high-profile tactician arrived in Dhaka this morning.

According to BFF sources, if all goes well, Dooley will hit the ground running this Sunday (May 24), leading the national team’s preparation camp for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and international window.

A Illustrious Playing Career

Though German by birth, Thomas Dooley represented the United States on the international stage. The defensive midfielder earned 81 caps and scored 7 goals during his 7-year international career with the USA. He was a key figure for the host nation during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, playing every single minute of their campaign.

His club football resume is equally impressive. Dooley played for top-tier German Bundesliga clubs like Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04. Notably, he won the UEFA Cup (now known as the UEFA Europa League) with Schalke in 1997. He also clinched the Bundesliga title with FC Kaiserslautern during the 1990–91 season.

Rich Managerial Experience

Dooley’s success on the pitch successfully transitioned into a rich coaching career:

  • United States National Team: Served as the assistant coach to the legendary Jürgen Klinsmann from 2011 to 2014.

  • Philippines National Team: Spent nearly five successful years as the head coach of the Philippines, famously guiding them to an AFC Asian Cup qualification. He briefly returned to the Philippines dugout in 2022.

  • Other Assignments: To broaden his footballing expertise, Dooley worked as the Sporting Director for the Vietnamese V-League club ‘Viettel’. Before taking up the Bangladesh role, he was serving as the head coach of the South American nation, Guyana.

First Mission: San Marino

Thomas Dooley’s tenure on the pitch with Bangladesh will begin on June 5. The Red and Green brigade is scheduled to fly to Europe in the last week of May for an international friendly against San Marino. Football fans across the country are optimistic that under Dooley’s guidance, Bangladesh football will scale new heights.
