Foreign Desk: Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, a former senator from the country’s Balochistan province, has been sworn in as the prime minister of Pakistan’s 8th caretaker government.
He took oath in front of the country’s President Arif Alvi at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Monday.
The newly departed Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and former cabinet members were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, and other senior officials.
The country’s new caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kaka met and shook hands with members of the armed forces after taking the oath.
His first task as caretaker prime minister will now be to form a cabinet to run the country during the elections.
Kakar was announced as caretaker prime minister on Saturday, following days of speculation about possible candidates for the post and several rounds of meetings between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader Raja Riaz.
Kakar’s caretaker government should be elected within the next 90 days.
However, since the country’s outgoing government has finally approved the new census, the Election Commission will now have to redefine the electoral boundaries.
