Largest ‘Bangabandhu Memorial Mural’ Demolished in Jashore by Protesters

Jessore Correspondence: The largest Bangabandhu memorial mural in the country, located in Jashore, was demolished by a group of agitated students and locals using hammers, shovels, and an excavator.

The incident took place on Thursday (February 6) from 4:00 PM until evening at the Bakultala intersection in the city.

During the demolition, leaders of the Islami Chhatra Majlis (Islamic Student Assembly) announced that a new memorial mural honoring two martyrs of the 1969 mass uprising in Jashore would be constructed at the site.

Abu Darda Naeem, the secretary of the Jashore city unit of Islami Chhatra Majlis, stated, “We have ousted the Awami League. They will no longer be able to hold their heads high in front of this nation.

With this goal in mind, we have been trying for a long time to demolish this mural in Jashore. Today, we requested an excavator from the municipality, and they provided it.”

He further added that the new memorial would be built entirely with funds from students and would honor the two Jashore martyrs of the 1969 uprising, Imtiaz Ahmed Jabir and Shahid Abdullah.

The demolition has sparked widespread reactions, with many condemning the act as an attack on the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Authorities are yet to comment on the incident, and further developments are awaited.
