Lightning Strikes Claim 9 Lives Across 4 Districts in Bangladesh

Desk Report –  At least nine people were killed by lightning strikes in four districts across the country on Monday.

The fatalities occurred between morning and afternoon in Sunamganj, Netrokona, Habiganj, and Noakhali. This follows a tragic Sunday where 15 people lost their lives to lightning in eight districts.

Sunamganj and Netrokona Hit Hardest

Sunamganj and Netrokona reported the highest casualties, with three deaths each. Two deaths were reported in Habiganj and one in Noakhali.

  • Sunamganj: The deceased are Jamir Uddin (38) and Jamir Hossain (40) from Sadar Upazila, and Abu Salek (24) from Jamalganj. They were struck while harvesting paddy, opening a shop, or tending to cattle. Three others were injured in Shantiganj Upazila.

  • Netrokona: In Khaliajuri, Monayem Khan Palan (50), laborer Shubho Mandal (45), and fisherman Abdul Motaleb (55) were killed in separate incidents while working in the haor areas.

  • Habiganj: Maksud Mia (35) of Nabiganj and Abdul Salam (60) of Baniyachong died instantly while harvesting or returning from the fields. Another farmer, Samruj Mia (50), was injured.

  • Noakhali: In Hatiya, a 23-year-old shopkeeper named Arafat was killed by a strike while inspecting a nut field near his home.

Official Warning

Local authorities, including Hatiya UNO Russel Iqbal, expressed their condolences and urged citizens to remain indoors or seek safe shelter during Nor’wester (Kalbaishakhi) storms, as lightning risks significantly increase during the months of Baishakh and Jyaishtha.
