Dbarta24 Desk- A devastating wildfire complex raging through Spokane and surrounding areas in Washington State has forced officials to issue mandatory evacuation orders for approximately 60,000 residents.
The fast-moving blazes have already reduced at least 600 structures, including residential homes and commercial businesses, to ashes.
The crisis escalated rapidly over the weekend. On Sunday, Spokane Fire Department Chief Tom Williams reported that the “Spokane Area Fire”—a complex comprising three distinct wildfires—is actively advancing toward populated zones under evacuation orders.
Firefighting crews continue to battle the flames, which remain entirely uncontained.
According to the Federal Incident Management Team, the inferno had consumed 5,390 acres (nearly 2,180 hectares) of land by Sunday.
Despite the massive scale of property destruction, emergency officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown underscored the gravity of the situation, characterizing the event as “the most devastating natural disaster in our region’s history.”
The impact on local infrastructure has been severe. Regional utility provider Avista Utilities reported that roughly 10,000 customers were left without electricity by Sunday afternoon.
State environmental and emergency officials noted that the Spokane fires are part of a broader crisis, with wildfires currently burning across more than 250,000 acres statewide.
In response to the escalating catastrophe, Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide state of emergency.
Governor Ferguson also confirmed that he spoke directly with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to request immediate assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support local containment and relief efforts.
